Ash Vs. Evil Dead The Complete Collection Blu-Ray Review

Ash Vs. Evil Dead is the 30-episode follow-up to the classic movie series, comprised of The Evil Dead, The Evil Dead II, and Army of Darkness. How does it compare? Read on to find out...

When Ash Vs. Evil Dead starts, Ash is decades removed from his ordeals with the evil dead, but that does not stop him from trying to pick up women with tales of his heroic deeds. While high, he reads from the Necronomicon and unleashes a new evil onto the world. When the dead find him, he reluctantly asks his much younger co-workers, Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo), to help him in his new battle. The series follows Ash as he returns home to Elk Grove, Michigan, meets his long-lost daughter (Arielle Carver-O'Neill), and unites with former enemy Ruby (Lucy Lawless).

The Evil Dead franchise is one that I have always had mixed feelings about. The first film is a great, creepy horror film. The second is much like the first, only it starts to introduce comedic elements into the mix, which makes things a little absurd. The third film, Army of Darkness, eschews the horror in favor of Three Stooges slapstick comedy. I have no problems with horror-comedy - Ghostbusters IS my favorite film, after all - but the third film lost me because it was so vastly different from the tone of the original. The Ash Vs. Evil Dead TV series plays out more like an early Peter Jackson film, such as Dead Alive. If you never saw that film, I'll sum it up this way: over-the-top absurdly gory and bloody with it's tongue firmly in cheek. In short, where Army of Darkness lost me, Ash Vs. Evil Dead gets me back!

Shortly before the third season ended this past April, it was announced that the show would not be returning for a fourth season. Unfortunately, the producers were never told of this while the show was still in production. The third season, and now the entire series, ends on a cliff hanger. While the fans made an earnest push to get a fourth season on Netflix, that will not be happening. I hope that the powers-that-be will come together for a wrap-up movie. Even ALF got one; albeit several years later.

The six-disc set includes all 30 episodes of the series (10 per season) that aired on Starz from 2015-2018.

I should note that there's a strange issue with Disc 6 (Season 3, Disc 2) and my LG BP125 Blu-ray player. It would not display the "Inside the World of Ash vs. Evil Dead" submenu under Special Features, which meant that I could not view the 10 short videos contained therein. Either it showed a blank "page", or it wouldn't display anything at all. This issue did not happen in my PlayStation 3.

Ash Vs. Evil Dead: The Complete Collection contains the same six discs you'll find individually in the Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3 sets. So, if you already have any or all of those, you don't need the Complete Collection. Of course, if you don't have any of the season sets, the Complete Collection is a great way to own all of them in a nice save-saving package for a cheap price. The Complete Collection is also available on DVD.

More videos (including some of the bonus features) can be found on the Starz YouTube channel. All images were taken from the IMDB gallery of the film, or were provided by Lionsgate (Season 2 & Season 3). The Blu-ray has been provided by Lionsgate for review on this site.
