I Still See You Blu-Ray Review

I Still See You (2018) is based on the novel Break My Heart 1,000 Times by author Daniel Waters. Is is any good? Read on to find out...

I Still See You is a supernatural thriller set ten years after an apocalyptic event left the world haunted by ghosts. When Roni (Bella Thorne) receives a threatening message from beyond the grave, she joins forces with Kirk (Richard Harmon), a mysterious classmate who has been studying these spectral "Remnants". Roni and Kirk descend into a shadow world that blurs the bounds of the living and the dead on a desperate race against time to stop a cunning killer.

I saw the trailer for I Still See You on the Blu-ray of Down A Dark Hall, and as a fan of a notable "ghost movie", it immediately caught my interest. A world filled with ghosts, not to be busted, but to co-exist with the living as memories of the past is an interesting concept. The movie explores that for a while, then turns into a murder-mystery with a villain whose sinister plot would make Vigo the Carpathian proud. The surprise villain isn't much of a surprise as there is such a small cast, that there isn't a very large pool of suspects to... well, suspect.

Watching the longer version of the final "showdown" in the deleted scenes section provides some clarification on the villain's motives, though you can figure most of it out for yourself. It doesn't explain the "rules" of the act. (I'm trying very hard not to explicitly state what the "act" is, though again, it's taken from Vigo's playbook in Ghostbusters II.) Why does the act have to happen on the birthday? Why did the villain's previous attempt fail because he was a minute off? How is it that the villain's "loved one" appears at his place of work in the flashback when she's, supposedly, dying at home at the same time? Why does the sign at the bridge say "Darkness Falls" when that's not the name of the town? Honestly, the movie left me with more questions than answers.

Plot aside, the movie looks great, especially the Remnant effects. This is how the ghosts should have looked in that 2016 movie that dares call itself Ghostbusters :-) The only issue I had visually was Bella Thorne's obviously black wig. What was wrong with her original red hair?

At a runtime of 1:38:11, I Still See You is presented in its original 2.40:1 aspect ratio with an 1080p transfer. On the audio side, there's an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio audio track. The film includes English SDH and Spanish subtitles. The first print run includes a slipsleeve.

All of the bonus features that can be found on the disc are in HD.
