Trailer Trauma 4: Television Trauma Blu-Ray Review
By Paul Rudoff on Apr. 15, 2020 at 9:54 PM in Home Video, Horror

This is one of an ongoing series of reviews that looks at various Blu-ray compilations of movie trailers and TV spots, most notably Umbrella Entertainment's Drive-In Delirium series and Garagehouse Pictures' Trailer Trauma series. Today's review details Trailer Trauma 4: Television Trauma. Read on to find out more...
As the title implies, this release contains TV spots from the 1960s through the 1980s, with the main focus being Grindhouse-type films: horror, action, martial arts, erotica, exploitation, blaxploitation, sci-fi, and kaiju. There are some mainstream Hollywood motion pictures represented here, but the majority are still obscure flicks, so this release may not be to everyone's liking. Since these spots were meant to air on television, they don't contain the nudity and mature content that the trailers in previous volumes did, but this is still not one for the kiddies. A lot of the movies that have spots here, also have full trailers in some of the previous Blu-rays I've reviewed.
The spots are not shown alphabetically or chronologically. I'm really not sure what the order is, though some similar-themed films are kept together. For the most part, there is one spot per chapter. All of the movie years come from the IMDB and are assumed to be correct. The spot list included inside the case doesn't list the years (or even give chapter numbers - which makes it kinda useless). I looked EVERYTHING up in the IMDB and used that.
I should also point out that the last five seconds of most spots is silent. This is normal. This is where an announcer would usually intone that the film is coming on a specific date to a local theater.
-- SPECIFICATIONS --
The total spot runtime is 3:01:33. The full chapter/spot list is below, following this review. All content is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 1.0 Mono. There are no subtitles, but were you really expecting any?!? All spots are shown in full 1920x1080 high definition, in the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio (aside from one spot), pillarboxed into a 16:9 frame. The following note is included inside the case: "The 16mm TV spots and trailers included in this volume are presented in their original 1.33:1 aspect ratios as they were seen on television. The occasional matting seen at the top and bottom of your screen is normal." The disc is region-free and plays fine on U.S. Blu-ray players.
-- PICTURE & AUDIO QUALITY --
Almost all of the spots were sourced from dirty/damaged film reels. As such, most of them are littered with scratches and dirt, with picture that doesn't always have the best color balance. A lot of the spots have audio that starts in-progress a second or two after the video starts, and a few are cut off at the end. I noted the worst of these in the list below.
There are also a few spots that appear to have been filmed off of a screen, be it a theater screen or a TV screen. I've noted #224 The Thing (1982), #225 Halloween II (1981), #229 Videodrome (1983), and #233 Amityville II: The Possession (1982) as definitely being done this way; and maybe #254. Halloween + Assault on Precinct 13 (double feature) (1978), too.
There are also two or three spots where the audio from one overlaps with the video of the one after it. I didn't keep track of them all, and I didn't note them in the list below, but here are a few: #263 Phantasm (1979) into #264 The Amityville Horror (1979) into #265 Killer's Delight (1978).
-- SPECIAL FEATURES --
There is an Audio Commentary with Michael Gingold, Grady Hendrix, and Chris Poggiali. There is also the following Garagehouse Pictures Trailers (8:37): The Intruder (1975), The Dismembered (1962), The Satanist (1968), Trailer Trauma #2 Blu-ray, Trailer Trauma #1 Blu-ray, and Ninja Busters (1984/2015).

-- PACKAGING --
The single disc comes inside a standard 12mm clear Blu-ray case. The reverse/inside of the case artwork is a spot list (no chapter numbers given - which makes it kinda useless) on the left side and part of the right side under the disc, while the other half of the right side contains cover art for a few other Garagehouse Pictures releases (with the aspect ratio note and credits underneath).
-- CONCLUSION --
This is a weird one to comment on. The films represented are a mix of stuff from previous volumes, and since the spots are usually 30 to 60 minutes long, none overstay their welcome. I can't even compare it to any of the other Blu-rays because none have TV spot collections. Some of the Drive-In Delirium releases have VHS trailers, some of which may be TV spots, but those are from Australia. So, I guess I'll just say that, overall, this is a nice volume. It's also nice to see Cannibal Girls (1973) (#220), the second feature film from Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, who paid homage to it in Ghostbusters II. I just wish the quality on these Trailer Trauma releases would improve.

Actually Evil Eye came out in 1963 aka “The Girl Who Knew Too Much” Italian: “La ragazza che sapeva troppo” https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057443/

Thanks for letting me know, Stuart. It’s been corrected. There are a few films from the era with that title, so it’s an easy mistake to make without sitting here and comparing each trailer/TV spot with the cast lists on IMDB. - Paul
