Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) was recently released on 4K UHD/Blu-ray Combo Pack by Lionsgate. Read on to find out more about it...
[ SYNOPSIS ]
Working in the shadow of his father, esteemed police veteran Marcus Banks (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner Detective William Schenk (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city's gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer's morbid game.
[ QUICK THOUGHTS ]
Spiral: From the Book of Saw is the ninth film in the venerable Saw film franchise, though it's Saw in name only. It's more like Training Day or 48 HRS, but with death traps. You don't need to have seen any of the previous Saw films because nothing that happened in them has any bearing on anything in this film. Spiral is set in the same universe, but John Kramer (Tobin Bell) has no part in the story. Other than a couple of still photos, you won't see Mr. Bell at all; making this the first film in the series without him. The film does bring back Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV director Darren Lynn Bousman. In addition, the film features notable "big name" actors Chris Rock (who is also an executive producer and fan of the series) and Samuel L. Jackson, along with Marisol Nichols, whom I had a crush on back when she played daughter Audrey in Vegas Vacation. When all is said and done, Spiral was an enjoyable film, even though it didn't have to be a Saw film, and I knew who the killer was about halfway through the film by paying attention to whose death scenes were shown and whose weren't.
