30 Rock: The Complete Series Blu-Ray Set Review

Back in 2006, two television series premiered on NBC that offered a behind-the-scenes look at a fictional sketch-comedy television show modeled after Saturday Night Live. One lasted for a mere season, and the other went onto a long seven season run. One was Aaron Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and the other was Tina Fey's 30 Rock. Guess which one was which.

30 Rock (2006-2013) is the story of quirky TV writer Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) and conservative company executive Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), bound together by chaos, charisma and employment contracts! Together Jack and Liz preside over the everyday mayhem at a late-night variety show with no help from Liz's loose cannon stars Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan) and Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski) and hapless NBC page Kenneth Parcell (Jack McBrayer).

30 Rock is a very quirky series, created by Tina Fey, that won multiple awards for the show and its stars. While some people may not like it, I thoroughly enjoyed it and its off-the-wall style that pokes fun at TV tropes and real-world situations, especially those surrounding the real-life NBC network and its ownership by GE and later Comcast (spoofed as Kabletown in the series). The show features a level of meta humor not seen since the short-lived Police Squad series back in 1982, and there are some jokes (like the one below) that you will miss if you don't do a freeze frame. You can find more of it in The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, also from creator Tina Fey. Ghostheads will find a ton of Ghostbusters references all throughout the series.

This box set contains all 7 seasons of the NBC series, consisting of a total of 138 episodes, on twenty discs. Each season is on three discs (Season 7 is on two discs), with each disc containing 6 or 7 episodes. Episode lengths vary, but are usually somewhere between 21:00 to 21:30 each.

30 Rock is presented in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio. There is only an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 audio track for all episodes, as well as English subtitles. Unlike most Mill Creek Entertainment releases, all of the bonus features from Universal's individual season DVD box sets have been ported over, as listed below. Some of the previous 4:3 letterbox content has had the top and bottom black bars cropped off to present it in a 16:9 widescreen format, which is why some items have poor picture quality. Do note that no names are given in the menus for the individual audio commentary participants, so I am providing that information for you myself. Also, no names are given for the deleted scenes, though I can provide some for the Season 2 episodes from Universal's DVD set.
